The deli and bakery share the back corner of G&M Family Market, and between the two counters they cover most of what you need for lunch, a quick dinner, or a get-together. It is the part of the store people duck into on the way home, and the deli and bakery are busiest right around the dinner rush.
At the deli
The deli slices lunch meat and cheese to order. Turkey, ham, roast beef, bologna, salami, American, Swiss, provolone, and cheddar are in the case, cut as thick or thin as you like. Ask for a sample if you are deciding between two. The counter also builds prepared meals and sides, which is what brings a lot of regulars in on their way home. Depending on the day you might find rotisserie-style chicken, macaroni salad, potato salad, and hot dinners packaged to reheat.
Party platters from the deli and bakery
For a party or a work lunch, the deli puts together meat and cheese platters, sandwich platters, and sub sandwiches made to length. Give the counter a day’s notice for the bigger orders so they can have everything sliced, built, and ready at pickup. Call the store at (207) 843-6422 to place an order, and add drinks and snacks from the grocery aisles while you are in.
Fresh from the bakery
The bakery bakes through the week, and the smell of it usually reaches the front door. Fresh-baked English toasting bread comes out of this oven, and it is one of the items regulars drive over for. Alongside it you will find dinner rolls, loaf bread, cookies, brownies, muffins, doughnuts, and pies. The cookies and sweets have a following of their own.
Bread and pastries are baked in batches during the day rather than all at once in the morning, so if a shelf looks light in the afternoon, ask. Another round may be coming out of the oven soon.
Holidays and special orders
Around the holidays the bakery takes orders for pies and larger baked goods, and those lists fill up early for Thanksgiving and Christmas, so it pays to call ahead. Birthday and celebration cakes can be ordered too, with a few days’ notice for anything decorated.
Lunch on the go
The deli and bakery also handle grab-and-go lunches for people passing through, which is handy if you are heading out for a day on the water, a hike, or a long drive. Pair a sandwich with a bag of chips, a cold drink from the cooler, and a couple of cookies from the bakery and you have lunch packed without a stop at a second place. On a busy morning the case near the registers holds pre-made sandwiches and containers of salad so you can grab one and keep moving. If you want something built fresh, the counter will make it while you finish shopping. For a hot Italian sandwich or pizza instead, the Amato’s counter is a few steps away.
